Acrylic Workshop. Limted Palette from the Masters with Alicia Harvey. January 3, 2016

Acrylic Workshop: Choosing a Limited Palette from the Masters with Alicia Harvey
Sunday, January 3,2016
1-4:00,  $75

Are you dissatisfied with workshops that tell you what color palette to use? Are you searching for a palette which defines and supports you as an artist?

In this workshop, Alicia Harvey simplifies color palettes to three acrylic colors, plus Titanium White to act as a foundation for your own personal palette.

Alicia guides each artist to choose the foundation of a personalized palette by assisting him/her in either:

  • choosing from 4 limited palettes (3 colors plus Titanium White) based on 4 paintings by well-known Masters (Vermeer, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso)  - OR -
  • creating your own limited palette by bringing a photocopy of a painting that speaks to your colorful self.

After choosing and purchasing your colors in the store, Alicia will then guide you through specific exercises to help you understand your colors, including a final exercise to play with these colors in a fun and informative study.

$75 (plus the cost of 4 acrylic paints of your choice during the workshop)

Paper and brushes supplied.

Please call 425-643-1781 to register.

A message from the artist:
My sister and I visited Paradise Lodge at Mt. Rainier. We are lifetime hikers and we headed up the trails that lace the area above the Paradise Lodge. I kept stopping to take photos of a striking cloud bank that first appeared at the base of the Tatoosh mountain range. I didn't think much of it until the rangers started calling to us to get off the mountain. We were very reluctant to do this but they were predicting that the cloud bank was bringing extreme wind, rain, thunder and lightning. Convinced, we headed down and a good thing we did. That night thunder and lightning and driving rain kept me awake most of the night. The paintings here are from my photos and my memory.

Pigment particles reflect light differently, especially when applied in layers. Doing an underpainting lays a foundation that infuses your portraits with depth and richness hard to achieve any other way.

In this demo, Molly - a past president of the Northwest Watercolor Society - will show you how to plan your underpaintings and choose colors that can help define your values and enhance your skin tones.

Building a Bridge from Realism to Abstraction with Watercolor
    Tom Hoffman

    Free Demonstration:
    Saturday, October 10, 2015  11-12:00  and  2-3:00

Building a Bridge from Realism to Abstraction with Watercolor

For many painters the trajectory of their practice is toward greater emphasis on form and less on content. As we move from realism to abstraction, the paint itself gradually becomes the subject matter. When shapes and strokes are deliberately seen as both representations of reality and as marks on paper, we are crossing from the realm of illusion into what may feel like uncharted territory.
How do we decide what works best when we let go of the usual standards? Are there any guidelines, or is abstraction a painting free-for-all?

In fact, the same standards that apply to realists are equally important to abstract painters. A painting with too many shapes, for example, feels busy whether it is a cityscape or a non-representational collection of forms. Wherever your work resides on the continuum from realism to abstraction it will benefit from being clear and deliberate in your use of value, composition, color and edge quality. As you extend the range of your comfort zone you can keep one foot in familiar territory.
In the demonstration we will look at a series of images that illustrate the shift of emphasis from content to form. We will consider what gives each painting its structure, and assess the roles played by illusion and emotion.
In the workshop we will learn to balance thoughtfulness and spontaneity, letting go of content-based dependency while holding onto sound formal guidelines.

Tone is the most difficult thing to master in art. Make no mistake; the slightest deviation in the correct relationships between tone groups in any scene often makes the difference between a convincing rendering of light and a dead wall of paint. Let Michael show you some perfectly simple techniques for avoiding false relationships in your renderings. Also presented is a simple system by which any painter can mix any color they see--within the limits of modern pigment chemistry, that is.

Michael Lane was trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine arts and as the apprentice to Nelson Shanks in PhiladelphiaPA. A popular instructor at Moore College of Art and Design, DigiPen Institute of Technology, The Juliette Aristides Classical Atelier and Gage Academy of Art, Michael also founded Seattle Atelier, a school for progressive training techniques for painters, in South Seattle in 2014. www.seattleatelier.org/ www.michaellane.net
