Gyotaku, or Japanese Fish Printing, has many possibilities for printmakers and multi media artists.  In Japan, the artists add rocks, shells, seaweed and more to create exquisite works.  Sherry Lee Duncan has experimented with these prints in the US and in Mexico.  She even printed a marlin, as a souvenier for a fisherman to keep of his prize catch.

Sherry will show you how she begins with an unscaled fish and the Japanese rice papers available at Daniel Smith, and uses basics of composition to create beautiful prints using Daniel Smith iridescent acrylics.

Discover which pigments granulate, why some colors stain, and the ideal landscape colour palette. Learn the keys to color permanence and lightfastness.

Christine Hanlon
Christine Hanlon is a working artist/teacher from the San Francisco Bay area, who has been part of the Artist Outreach Program for Winsor & Newton since 1998. She has been trained on methods and materials with Winsor & Newton in London, and has conducted technical seminars on color and paint at colleges and universities throughout Northern California and the Pacific Northwest.
 

Her extensive resume includes invitational and juried museum and gallery shows, as well as traveling exhibitions. Her maritime paintings have received multiple awards in the Coos Art Museum's annual maritime exhibitions, including a Best in Show in 2008. Her urban landscape work was featured in the Artist's Magazine Competition Spotlight in September 2009. A cover image and feature article on her maritime paintings is published in the winter 2010-11 issue of Sea History Magazine. She received a BFA in Painting from RISD in 1976 and an MFA in Painting from the Academy of Art University in 1997, where she currently teaches at the graduate level.

Yuming Zhu will demonstrate his interpretation of sumi brush strokes of traditional character of Horse, and also demonstrate painting Horse with contemporary technique to capture the essence the beauty of the animal. 

In this demo, Yuming will also brief discuss the symbolic meaning of horse in Chinese art.  Knowledge of Sumi materials will be shared in the demo. This demo is a good preparation for the June workshop at Daniel Smith.
