This demo is focused on producing a batik-like painting using colored pencils, watercolor and a special paper. Batik designs or drawing are made drawing with a hot wax as a resist on fabric when it is dipped in dye. To achieve a similar effect with watercolor on paper, wax based Prisma colored pencils are used as the resist. Rives BFK lightweight, available in white and cream is the paper used for this technique. Daniel Smith watercolors fill my palette and some DS watercolors I have really had success using that may not be ones that you have used before. Once my drawing is established with colored pencils and the areas that need to resist the watercolor are finished the paper is dipped into water; crumpled into a ball; carefully flattened on a board and while wet watercolor is applied. During the drying process watercolor values can be intensified or darkened if necessary and when the painting dry it is ironed to flatten. It is an effect that is quite fun and the outcome unique. -Ruth Glenn Little

Create batik on paper using Prismacolor pencils and watercolor on Rives BFK paper. Ruth Little will teach you how to do this innovative process she developed after being inspired by what she learned about batik while living in Indonesia for several years. The workshop will focus on creating various aspects of this batiking effect with participants making a series of small simple color pencil resist drawings and applying watercolor to develop, explore an understanding of possibilities
and potential of this technique.

Space is limited for Ruth’s workshop, please register early by calling
