Samantha daSilva in the Studio

Samantha daSilva- Biography
Beneath her amiable personality burns a fervent fire to express life through art and dialogue. Samantha daSilva is a professional artist, educator, curator, and avid blogger living and working in Calgary, Canada.
Born in Brazil, Samantha was inspired at an early age by her copiously artistic family. Her grandmother, a portrait artist, her aunt, an accomplished jewelry designer, and her mother, a watercolourist, all influenced Samantha to experiment with a variety of mediums.
Upon graduating high school, Samantha opted out of attending art school for a career path that was ‘safer’ and ‘more secure’. But life has a magnetic force that pulls you back to where you need to be. Ten years and an array of tumultuously revelatory experiences led her back to her initial love: art.
Intent on making up for lost time, Samantha dedicated herself full-time to creating and teaching art. Her passion for abstract painting has manifested itself though prolific expressions of art on canvas and varying media. Since ’08, Samantha’s work has been exhibited in over 100 different group and solo shows across North America.
As an educator, Samantha has instructed at various institutions and art organizations. Samantha has recently partnered with Liquitex as a representative and educator for the Artist Outreach Program.

Creating Batik Effects using Watercolor & Colored Pencil
with Ruth Glenn Little
Sunday, September 16th, 2012
at 12 pm & 2 pm - FREE demos!
RuthGlennLittle.com

This demo is focused on producing a batik-like painting using colored pencils, watercolor and a special paper. Batik designs or drawing are made drawing with a hot wax as a resist on fabric when it is dipped in dye. To achieve a similar effect with watercolor on paper, wax based Prisma colored pencils are used as the resist. Rives BFK lightweight, available in white and cream is the paper used for this technique. Daniel Smith watercolors fill my palette and some DS watercolors I have really had success using that may not be ones that you have used before. Once my drawing is established with colored pencils and the areas that need to resist the watercolor are finished the paper is dipped into water; crumpled into a ball; carefully flattened on a board and while wet watercolor is applied. During the drying process watercolor values can be intensified or darkened if necessary and when the painting dry it is ironed to flatten. It is an effect that is quite fun and the outcome unique. -Ruth Glenn Little

Drawing with Color using Pastels with Joe Mac Kechnie, FREE Demos, September 9th, 2012

Pastel Drawing by Joe MacKechie

Drawing with Color using Pastels with Joe Mac Kechnie
Sunday, September 9th, 2012
at 12 pm & 2 pm - FREE demos!
JLMackechnie.com
Once you have developed your drawing skills using black and white techniques, you are ready to move on to using color mediums. Using color successfully can take months and years of training and practice to master, especially if you want to use oils, watercolor and or other mediums. However, pastels can be used with little training and are a natural progression from black and white drawing materials. You will ultimately need to master color mixing (for oils, etc), but you can do this while you are already creating powerful works with pastels.

Art instructor and artist Joe Mac Kechnie will introduce you to basic pastel techniques and why he believes pastels are the perfect next step after learning to draw. In his demo, Joe will show you how you can create a charcoal drawing and then add color to it. He will also show you how to use color pastels to create the same drawing without using charcoal. Some color theory will be introduced.
