Pastel Portraits with Don Lee, FREE Demos, April 21st, 2012

Pastel Portrait by Don Lee

PASTEL: Rapid Portraits in Pastels with Don Lee
Saturday, April 21st, 2012
at 11 am & 1:45 pm - FREE demos!

For this demonstration, Don will be working from a model (a volunteer is welcome!**) and creating a profile in pastel. He can often do these in 15 to 20 minutes. Rather than working in a complete blur, Don will pause in answering questions and offering commentary.

Even in a quickly done drawing in pastel, a solid foundational drawing is important. Once (rapidly) done, the layering of pastels begins. These are often done using the hardest ones progressing to the softer ones. Pastel pencils allow particular facial features such as the eyes and mouth get the attention and detail they need.

Two thirds of the time will be used for the facial features and the balance of the likeness will be achieved. Don will then pick up the pace again roughing in the back of the head and establishing the hair. Instead of painstakingly drawing all the hair, a general impression of its flow and direction will be given. This will contrast nicely with the details achieved in the face proper.

**The volunteer model will then get to keep the portrait!
