We are very excited and fortunate to have Tom Hoffmann at DANIEL SMITH’s Seattle and Bellevue Stores this weekend, December 15th & 16th, for demos and book signings for his New Book that came out this week on December 11th! Tom will spend the first hour with a demonstration illustrating a topic from his new book, then the last half hour will be answering questions and signing his gorgeous new book:

Watercolor Painting A Comprehensive Approach to Mastering the Medium
by Tom Hoffmann:

The beauty of a watercolor painting lies in its diaphanous layers, delicate strokes, and luminous washes. However, the very features that define the beauty of the medium can make it difficult to master. This complete guide to understanding the relationships between color, value, wetness, and composition unravels the mysteries of watercolor to help your practice evolve.

Experienced teacher and acclaimed artist Tom Hoffmann offers a unique, inquiry-based approach that shows you how to translate any subject into the language of watercolor. With Hoffmann as your guide, you’ll learn the key questions to ask yourself at every turn and time-tested methods to help you reach solutions.

Hoffmann’s thorough explanations and step-by-step demonstrations delineate the process of composing a painting in watercolor, while art from more than thirty-five past and present masters, including John Singer Sargent, Ogden Pleissner, George Post, Emil Kosa, Jr., Mary Whyte, Trevor Chamberlain, Lars Lerin, Torgeir Schjølberg, Piet Lap, Leslie Frontz, and Alvaro Castagnet serve to illustrate and inspire. Whether you’re a serious beginner or a seasoned practitioner, this book will guide you toward the all-important balance between restraint and risk-taking that every watercolorist seeks
********
Tom’s demo will be about Chapters 1 & 2:
“How do you decide what kind of work to do for making your preliminary studies?” Some of this information is in the INKSMITH article, “What Not to Paint”, as the principles are unchanging. Tom will be showing examples of images during his painting demo, and he will talk about “How to determine what’s the important part of the subject and make sure it’s still visible when you are finished. How to identify what looks [ HONESTLY ] tricky about it” These are topics from Chapters 1 & 2:
- How to get started:
Page 23, “Revisiting Your Purpose”, What needs to be true in the finished painting?”
Pages. 24-27, “Identifying the Tricky Parts”.

WATERCOLOR: Intense Color & Contrast with James Farrand
Saturday, December 8th, 2012 - FREE demos!
at 11 am & 1:30 pm
JF-Creative.com

James Farrand will discuss and demonstrate—among other things—various aspects of contrast in art and color. In particular, he'll discuss some of the concepts developed by swiss painter and teacher, Johannes Itten, including contrast of hue, contrast of saturation, and contrast of extension/proportion.

Watch as James also demonstrates the basics of how he go about achieving these contrasts in the medium of watercolor. By using techniques such as pouring/squeezing, charging, glazing, and masking, you’ll see how he creates paintings with highly saturated colors and values that often have viewers asking, 'that's a watercolor?'.

With thoughtful attention to these concepts/techniques, and a goodly amount of patience and a friendly blow-dryer, you can too.
