To celebrate, both our Bellevue and Seattle DANIEL SMITH Stores will be having FREE Introduction to Origami Demos with Origami Artists John Smiley, Terry Allen and Ayumi Hayatsu.  John, Terry and Ayumi are member of  P.A.P.E.R. (Puget Area Paperfolding Enthusiasts Roundtable) which is part of Origami-USA.org.

John Smiley will be demonstrating one of his original origami designs (the Basket) as well as a few classical designs. Learn more about the history and materials for making origami from John, Terry and Ayumi at these FREE demos.

A review of facial proportions, shadow dynamics, and edge control is followed by demonstration of techniques for free and loose watercolor application. Hands on exercises will help you experience the watercolor medium as being fun and playful rather than fearful and demanding. You’ll learn a lot and have a good time doing it.

from 11 am to 1 pm - Special time! 

"This FREE demo (or mini workshop since you are invited to draw too!) will cover the basics of drawing from life. Still life, landscapes, figures, portraits, the principles are all the same.
The demo will focus on the very basics of learning to see and then learning to interpret and design in drawings. It will cover procedure, values, edges, simplification and design, and measuring.

 The first half of the demo/workshop, I will demo the very basics and lay them out in a simple way.

In the second half of the demo/workshop we will set out some fruit and give the participants a chance to apply the new information. I will come around and help everyone for the remaining 45 minutes or so.

This demo/workshop is a great chance to begin with the fundamentals or to catch up if you've already got some working knowledge.

Please bring materials to draw with and a piece of your favorite fruit. Daniel Smith will also have supplies on hand available for purchase."

Joe Mac Kechnie will be sharing his tips on how to add people to your watercolor landscapes.

  • How to simply draw and paint the shapes of people.
  • Adding people to give a sense of scale to the composition.
  • Adding people to strengthen the focal point.

 The materials that Joe will be using at his demo:
  • Arches watercolor paper
  • DANIEL SMITH watercolors
  • Gouache paints (including white paint)
  • Pastels (NuPastels and soft pastels)
  • Water soluble black inks and pens
  • F&W acrylic inks

Art Framing 101 with Expert Framer Anita East at this FREE demo, learn (or review) basics of assembling a frame kit, forming an art package, and securing package to a frame using a framer's point gun. Learn to install dust jacket and quality hanging hardware, and how to select quality framing materials from a conservation standpoint.

At the demo, Anita will frame 1 standard art package into Artcare Frame Package, 1 prestretched canvas into a frame.

Materials Anita will be demonstrating:
Framer's point gun and points, wood and metal frame kits, pre-cut mats and backing, Lineco tapes and glue to include frame sealing tape, rabbet foam tape, linen and paper hinging tapes, PVC glue, 3M ATG tape, acrylic sealing medium such as GAC 100, hanging hardware, Kraft Paper or acid-free backing paper, Bump-Ons, sanding block, archival quality ArtCare systems, cotton gloves, boning tool.

Additional tools and supplies Anita will be using:
Flat-tip, cross-point, needle-nose, 19.2-V, soft hammer, extra u-spring, centering tape measure, centering ruler, scissors, glass, glass cleaner, blue shop towels, spacers, wire, hardware.

This is a great introduction demo for finding out to frame your art, and use the tools and supplies professional framers use and learn why they are used.

November 2011 Schedule of Artist Workshops at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store

Here is our schedule for Artist Workshops for November 2011 at the Bellevue DANIEL SMITH Store. These are usually 4 to 5 hour long "Hands On" workshops with the instructors demonstrating and teaching various art techniques. You will be creating during the workshop as you learn. These workshops have a fee, a list of supplies to bring to work with, and require registration. Please regiester early to be sure of a spot for you in the workshop, and to make sure workshops are not cancelled due to low enrollment. To Register, please call the Bellevue Store at: 425-643-1781.
